Adaptive Streaming: the future of online video delivery
Before Adaptive Streaming, video on the web had always been plagued by two major issues: quality of the video (either too small or too blurry) and reliability of the playback (constant rebuffering or stuttering). The problem was that the two variables were interrelated. Increasing the quality requires higher bandwidth, and using less bandwidth to minimize re-buffering sacrificed video quality.
With Adaptive Streaming, users do not choose a stream, but simply connect to the live event. If bandwidth drops, instead of pausing, the stream is seamlessly transitioned to the next lower bitrate stream. When the bandwidth recovers, the stream will automatically use the higher bitrate. No decision needs to be made by the user. The user is able to watch the live event, in the best quality possible, without pauses or interruptions in the video stream.
Adaptive Streaming allows programmers to offer a higher quality viewing experience to a broader audience. Being able to offer HD streams all the way down to low bandwidth streams, without pauses or interruptions of the video, makes for a significantly improved consumer experience.
Easy implementation of Adaptive Streaming using Spinnaker
Inlet's Spinnaker can provide up to 4 simultaneous streams per encoder from the same input channel, and the Spinnaker Management Console can configure, synchronize, manage and monitor multiple Spinnakers. Inlet’s patent pending technology allows the encoders to be in sync down to the frame level, which is a requirement for smooth transitions across streams from different physical encoders.
Spinnaker encoders enable Adaptive Streaming solutions from all of the major market players, including Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming, Adobe’s Dynamic Streaming, and HTTP streaming to the Apple iPhone.
